What is the Live-in Caregiver Program? In Canada, there is a shortage of Canadians or Permanent Residents to fill positions as nannies and live-in caregivers. As a result, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), and Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) established the Live-in caregiver Program to accommodate this shortage. Canadian Employers can hire Foreign caregivers to work in Canada temporarily as a live-in caregiver, to help families care for children, elderly persons or people with disabilities.

| In Ontario, the minimum hourly rate that is paid to a live-in nanny/caregiver is $10.00/hr. It is the responsibility of the employer and the nanny/caregiver to negotiate a higher wage (if more than one person is being cared for). A normal week consists of a minimum of 30 hours to a maximum of 44 hours. There must be a written agreement between the employer and caregiver for hours in excess of 44 hours/week to a maximum of 48 hours. Both party must agree to either payment to the caregiver at time-and-a half, or time off in lieu of payment. The out-of-pocket cost to the employer for a live-in caregiver for one month (based on 40 hours/week) is approximately: $1,400.00. |
